I absolutely adore waking up in the predawn hour of 5am. It’s lovely sitting with darkness still enshrouding the house seeing the flickering lights of downtown. The sounds of the dawning day touch my ears before the first glimmers of sunlight reach my eyes. How precious is the song of the first bird to sing out, “A new day is dawning.” There’s something about that pure, sweet sound piercing the darkness gradually to be joined by another then another. The sky gets lighter and lighter as more birds chirp out their morning songs to greet the day. Yes, I would have to say this is my favorite part of the day.
Some days, the sky brightens with the soft hues of morning light in pinks and oranges. And other days, like today, the sky simply grows brighter as if God is gradually turning on a dimmer switch saying, “Here is your new day. Now go out and be the light for Me in the lives you encounter. Be gentle and gradual; loving and patient.” Just as we lived a day of thunderstorms yesterday and face the possibility of more rain today, so are the lives that we may encounter. Some are weathering storms they must go through and they need a gentle, gradual exposure to love that isn’t overwhelming but patient and comforting. Another day will come where they are ready for the awe-inspiring sunrise of a brilliant sky… but not today.
My prayer list contains the names of several going through a stormy time in their lives. Or perhaps that is your life right now. The songs of the morning birds remind me that scripture tells us not to worry. We are much more valuable to Him than birds!
Then Jesus said to His disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?” (Luke 12:22-26, NIV)
Whatever storms overshadow us in our daily lives; we need not worry when we have a God who loves us so very dearly. Listen to the song of the birds today. Enjoy the lightening day. Know you are loved so much more than you can even begin to imagine. Be kind, patient and gentle with those around you today.
